PostSubject: LEDs for the Seadoo Speedster   LEDs for the Seadoo Speedster Icon_minitime1Sun May 10, 2009 2:40 pm

So I order some LEDs for the boat. They are fully submergable and obviously waterproof. Maybe Jeremy next time he comes to town can help wire them up. They run off a standard 12v so wire them up and get a switch.

I was going to get blue but the water pigs are kind of douchers in Oregon so thats that.

OMG I didn't even think about it. But would it be legal? Jeremy, or any nerd I guess if I were to run these off a switch what would the diagram look like?

That diagram looks good. How many were you thinking of wiring up? Each 1-Watt LED would draw about 83mA current from 12VDC, so size the switch and fuse to total amps (mA x 1000).

I wouldn't count on LED for headlights though. Their light is usually really diffused, not focused, so better for show and glow than a headlamp (unless you pile a bunch on, yeah!).

Not a head light, you hit it on the head with the show and glow comment. The only two items I am worried about it is wiring it properly and how much juice these puppies will suck from my boat battery.

700 cranking amps 12VDC

The big LEDs use 1W which I would asssume is nothing.

I am going to order the small ones if I can get the other ones installed pretty easily. Dan is going to help me on Sunday to get the boat dialed in.

Let's see - if your battery can supply 700 amps then it could power over 8400 of these LEDs. I say try it!

Seriously, a crappy Audiovox head unit would draw ten times as much as one of those LEDs so no worries there. Sorry to be in a rush on the phone yesterday - I was thinking about parts here you could also probably find at Schucks:

http://www.radioshack.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2032289

Just an idea, but you can take the positive lead to fuse into a dual-row barrier strip, and add the 8-position jumper (if you don't feel like chopping up a bunch of cable bits) to connect the leads, then run each wire out from there. You could also daisy chain. Call this afternoon and let me know how it went!

A special thanks to Dan and Casey for helping with these lights. We all wish Jeremy could have been there we probably would have saced like 2hrs. Dan did a great job of pin-Pointing some key issues in my crap Daisy-Chain wiring. Any who without futher typing I giving you the light-up with git-up ride.

Jeff,

You're welcome. I wish I had been there!

Dan,

Nice driveway! You should get these blinkers on all four.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the install, Steve thanks for slowing the process down but also moral support I guess ( Evil or Very Mad ) is what counts. Man they look great, only a couple weeks left until the July camping trip.

Got the covers installed for the LEDs, need to clean the 8200 silicone off but other than that they look great. I am gonna trial the size and see if they need to be shorten or if they put out a perfect amount of light.
